Junior Open Championships North 2010

The 2010 Junior Open Championships North were held at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford on the 20th March 2010.

The 11 person Wakefield team put up a credible performance reaching a number of the age group finals.

This was an incredible performance due to the fact that a large proportion of the team were competing in age groups higher than their actual age in order to stay with their training partners.

However, it was always going to be tough to win medals in a competition with the largest number of entrants turning out than has been seen for a long time.

Despite good performances in the under 10 age group finals, unfortunately no medals were won.

Two silver medals were achieved in the under 14 age group for kata and tanto by 11 year old Charlotte Fountain and 12 year old Morgan Murphy. In the kata the pair came really close to a gold medal with scores being tied for first place with the eventual winners. On count back (all five scores taken into account) the teams were STILL tied, so the scores from the first round were taken into account. Unfortunately, the Bradford team had scored slightly higher in the first round making them the winners.

The under 16 category saw three bronze medals won by 13 year old Luke Fountain and 14 year old Brandon Murphy.

Wakefield entered two teams into the under 16 open kata. Charlotte Fountain and Morgan Muphy managed an impressive 5th place with the first 2 sections of the Koryu Dai Yon, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Luke Fountain and Brandon Murphy made it to the final with a demonstration of the Koryu Dai Ni, but unfortunately did not quite make a medal placing, finishing in a highly credible 4th place.

Head coach Adrian Tipling said "The team performed extremely well in a difficult competition and particularly because of the team competing in higher age groups. The strong performances bode well for the future as the team become more experienced in those particular age groups which should lead to further medals being achieved."
